What is a Website Template?

Example Templates

A website template is a pre-designed layout for a website.  It is completed with a theme and stock images and comes with all the files needed to customize the website to fit the needs and look of an industry-specific website.

Don’t I want a Custom Website for My Business?

This is a question that only you can answer, but here are a few things that will help you make that decision:

  • What is your budget?
  •

A typical budget to custom code (from the ground) a quality flash or dynamic website for commercial use would be around $5000.  Most sites are far above that number or of far less quality than you deserve.  Webkinz.com was a $20 million project!

A premium flash or Dynamic Website template with complete custom modifications will only cost you less than a fourth of that.

  • What is your deadline?
  •

A custom coded website is a 4-8 week project at even the smallest capacity.  Mind you, I am not talking about a 1-3 page online brochure, I am talking about a website like the templates will provide.

A customized template site is produced, tested, and launched within 30 days

  • Are you creating a global brand or have a global marketplace?
  •

If so, then custom coding is the only choice.

Template sites can be modified so far that they are actually an entire new website (and I have done so on many occasions) providing only the text layout, but I believe in corporate identity and if your market is global I would want to build upon a solid foundation of branding and have reserves about templates.

    The Pros of Template Websites

    ·         Templates are sold to 25-30 buyers who will modify them to a certain degree, thus creating custom sites from pre-designed layouts.  This enables designers to spend the time producing a top of the line product and still have a price point that is tolerable for even the smallest budget.  So, a template site will be superior in to most of your competitors who are paying top dollar for custom ground-level coding in coding, usability, and aesthetics.

    ·         Templates are coded to be modified and so they are well organized and easy for the spiders to navigate and list your site high in the search rankings.  The code is also always W3C Valid code which is also a rarity for commercial websites, but plays a huge factor in both usability and rankings.

    ·         Templates are relatively inexpensive to purchase and will take your online presence to higher ground buy being cutting-edge, valid, and usable on all web browsing platforms.

    The Cons of Template Websites

There is really only one major con I can think of and it would only occur if you didn’t customize your template to the point that it was unique.  So, the only con (which I have never seen happen) is that a user will find your template at another URL and notice that it looked similar to another site they were on.

Here is why this is unrealistic and simply a moot point:

    1.      All your images and text are customized

    2.      Template sites do not represent multi-million dollar websites that most people frequent and remember.  They represent smaller commercial sites that target a niche or geographical market.

    3.      Niche markets are NEVER judgmental on small company’s online budgets.  All they care about is finding you to solve their problem or provide their needs.  That’s it!  In this instance the website layout is merely the presentation and the content is what they are searching for.

So, for this to be an issue, the most likely scenario is that the user actually sought    out duplicate content and even then it would seem unreasonable to find it.  If this scenario happened I would place my bet that particular user was not going to convert to a sale.

How would you like to present your company?

How are your competitors presenting their companies?

Do you really want to spend 4x the dough for the same ROI?
