CB2 – Child Robot is Maturing Fast

Submitted by Andrew on Wednesday, 8 April 2009No Comment

Remember that Steven Spielberg movie “Ai”?  The “Child Robot With Biomimetic Body” (CB2 for short) is a robot that mimics human functions that will teach lessons about child development.

CB2, the child robot growing up

The child-bot comes to us from a team at Osaka University in Japan and is packs a whopping 51 air-powered motors plus 197 tactile sensors under the soft, light gray silicone exoskeleton, or skin coating, covering its body.

CB2 stands at approximately 4 feet, 3 inches tall weighs in at 73 pounds, which would put the size of the robot in the third or fourth grade. The robot, however, was designed to function as a one-two year-old.

Since the robot first terrified the internet in late 2007, it has come back as a more technologically advanced design and format.

Its designers state that CB2 is developing social skills by recording human facial expressions via cameras mounted in the eyes, matching them with physical sensations and impulses, and then integrating them into basic categories such as (sad, happy, mad, etc.) on its mother boards. It can also allegedly navigate across a room “quite smoothly”–with minimal assistance. Osaka University engineering professor Minoru Asada  is heading up the team behind CB2 and states that he hopes the small android will have the ability to speak in basic sentences within a couple years.

This development is great!  Heck, everyone loves robots, but I still think this one is just a tad creepy.  Maybe if Hollywood would quit telling us that robots are the enemy then it would be far less creepy, but I still see Terminator, Matrix, Ai, and more every time I see a development like this.
