Tweeting for Tragedy
As with all tools, Twitter is only as good as the person using it. While you and I may Tweet about things like what we had for breakfast and what outfit to wear today, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore have other ideas. Ashton had a goal of 1,000,000 followers last night (watch Asthon cross the million here) and I was on the front-lines in his efforts. Why, because of his purpose…that’s why. I don’t have a ton of money (yet) but I did buy 3 mosquito nets in the fight to save a child’s life of Malaria. What better could I spend $30.00 on? What better could I tweet about? What better could you Tweet about?

How about making it a goal to involve your favorite charities in your Tweets? If we all sponsor one charity of our choice on Twitter and post about it once a week, Twitter will change the world!
The point here is, what are you Tweeting for? I ask this because I am a man of self-promotion and Ashton made me realize something. The best way to self-promote is with a worthy cause and humility. Nothing more is needed. If you think about it, some of the most influential men in history (dating back to Jesus) were humble and honored a cause.
So, I go back into my updates and read them. Yes, I like what I wrote, but the majority of it I wrote or someone paid me to write. This isn’t right at all! I need to focus on what other’s need and what my fellow Twitterers gain from my writing. Yes, I know the information is great, but am I just providing information or am I giving Twitterville myself as a person. After all, that’s really what everyone wants on Twitter anyway, and besides; isn’t it much easier to be yourself than to provide links all of the time? I don’t know quite yet, but I am about to find out…
So, this entry is simply to fess up to my acts of self-promotion (which is okay in moderation) and ask other SEO’s out there to think about others needs today. On this wonderful “Follow Friday” evening, ask yourself, “What have I done for Twitterville today?”
