The New Era Of Web Search

Submitted by Andrew on Sunday, 15 November 2009No Comment

As we all know, the internet is a fast-changing environment and is about to take a new turn for website promotion and visibility factors…Semantic Search or “Web 3.0”.

Founder of the World Wide Web and head of the only independent organization dedicated to consolidating and organizing the web, Tim Berners-Lee, has introduced the concept of semantic search to replace the current “keyword query” search model.

Dubbed Web 3.0, this semantic model of presenting search results has already seen the light with Yahoo’s SearchMonkey feature and some other smaller search engines, but is fast becoming the protocol for web search.

What is Semantic Search?

Semantic search uses the context surrounding the keywords found within a site that match a users query to determine relevance. Whereas the current model returns results based on volume, semantic search will be focusing on overall relevance of the text to the entirety of the search query.

For example, if I were to search today for “Palin McCain” I would get websites concerning each of these people. With semantic search, the context of the website would tell the search engines that I am looking for information about the ’08 election concerning the Republican Party and would return results more specific to my needs while filtering results less specified.

Because of this semantic search model, it is important for companies who use SEO services to focus on usability and content more so than ever. Creative content directed at targeted audiences and markets will be the winner in the near future. Keyword techniques are becoming obsolete at a tremendous pace and the smart SEO is already preparing his clients with a vast amount of usable information content to stay “in the game” for the next couple years.
